We all have busy lives with people and interests pulling us in different directions all the time. Many of us try to be everything to so many people that we forget to take care of the small things that make our own lives work. I am guilty of this all the time, but it recently showed the toll forgetting the details can take.
On Saturday I was rushing through a workout after my last client and I tweaked my lower back. Now if you know me, you know I have had back surgery in the past to repair a herniated disc. That was actually the catalyst to getting me into the fitness business, but that’s a different story. I work with clients all the time with lower back problems and I tell them my story and how I help myself avoid future problems. I give pretty good advice; stretch multiple times a day focusing on the muscles that act on your hip, knee, and lower back/core, strengthen your core muscles and don’t neglect the lower back, and of course eat right and maintain a healthy weight. However, in the hustle of my daily life I have let my own daily stretching go, I’ve let my workouts get disjointed and haven’t focused on all of my muscle groups. I worked Saturday morning and had some plans in the afternoon. I decided to try and get a quick work out in and rushed through it, didn’t properly warm up, and tweaked my back.
Now I have to take it easy and make sure I take care of this tweak before it gets worse and really limits my own fitness goals. The message here, at least to me, is pretty clear. We have responsibilities and obligations that can mess up our schedules, but we have to make sure we tend to ourselves. Slow down, be present, and focus on the task at hand.
Hope my mistake can help you stay on track to accomplishing your goals, in and out of the gym. Be Great!
